Day 4

Blue Mountains An hour west of Sydney, scenic valleys including the "Three Sisters" rock formation.

Days 5 and 6

Maroubra Beach We stayed with our family friend Michelle at her place on Maroubra Beach, near Sydney.

Days 6-8

Yulara We flew to Alice Springs and then made the long drive through the desert to the Yulara resort near Uluru (Ayers Rock), and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas).

Alice Springs Dessert Park

Day 9

Ellis Beach We stayed in a bungalow on the beach near Cairns on the rainforest northeast coast of Australia.

Kuranda We took a train up into the rainforest town of Kuranda, visited the touristy sites, and then took Sky Rail back down to Cairns.

Day 10

Great Barrier Reef No trip to Australia is complete without snorkeling and scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. We took a catamaran day trip out to Michaelmas Cay.

Day 12

Ballooning over Christchurch

Arthur's Pass After our balloon flight in Christchurch, we made the 3.5 hour drive across New Zealand through the Southern Alps at Arthur's Pass.

Day 13

New Zealand West Coast Another day of driving — this time from Greymouth up to North end of the South Island where we caught the ferry over to Wellington on the North Island.

Day 15

Geothermal Areas On the North Island between Taupo and Rotorua there are several geothermal areas, and nearby volcanoes.

Day 16

Hobbiton We visited the Hobbiton set from the Lord of the Rings movies in Matamata.
